Germanic Non-Visored Sallets (late 15th Century) by RobbieMcSweeney Germanic Non-Visored Sallets (late 15th Century) by RobbieMcSweeney
Had a little fun exploring these helmets. Probably my favourite style of helmet; with a bevor of course. What shall I do next?!

Some of these helmets were painted, with some really fancy designs too.

Yeah, I think most of the quickly made ones were painted. I saw a couple in the wallace collection. They looked pretty cool :)

Those are the ones I have seen in pictures. Apparently a lot of plate armor was painted once some genius realized oil paints adhere well to metals. I suppose a lot of those pieces didn't survive, or were polished clean once the paint faded beyond aesthetic appeal.

Yeah, there are a couple of examples of painted armour in the Wallace collection. They look pretty cool. I think Victorian era historians liked shining armour so they took the paint off of them. Most were painted for intimidation and the fact the armour maybe poorly made.

Yeah huge fan of the guy. Although it was the Wallace collection that gave me the inspiration to do this. Met Tobias Capwell, the curator of the museum. Really awesome guy! He's worth checking out on youtube :)

I have seen I think a book or two from Tobias Capwells and some videos of him being interviewed  - great stuff! Not sure I have seen his youtube channel though will look for it. Cool - I want to go visit the Wallace collection - its on my list for next time I am across the pond.
Cheers

Yeah he has a few books under his belt. They are worth checking out. Packed full of information on medieval armour. He has no channel on YouTube but he has got some lectures and interviews from Schologladiatoria on there :)

yes that's where I saw his interviews! I started HEMA a year ago and found that channel when I was looking about. Started working on the Messer in November.

How about you take a medieval knight armor and transform it into a modern 21 century equipment outfit. Would be quite challenging and I've seen it already done witha samurai armor. very interessting work.
